Hidden Sources of Peanuts

Peanuts can be "hiding out" in many of the foods we eat everyday. I've recently read an article on hidden sources of peanuts and here's a few things to look out for.
Peanuts can often be found in...

cereals
granola
grain breads
marzipan - a confection consisting primarily of sugar and usually almonds.
nougat - a confection made with sugar or honey and roasted nuts.
salad dressings
chocolate candy and candy bars
nut butters
sunflower seeds - often processed on the same equipment used for peanuts.
Ethnic foods - such as Thai and Mexican foods
Homemade baked goods and ice creams or bakery foods - may contain or have been in contact with peanuts or surfaces that had peanuts on them.
Vending or bubble gum/candy machines - may contain items with peanuts or have had items inside them that contained peanuts.

What Happen to the Personalized Tags?

I've had a few previous clients of Allergy Alert Tags contact me lately to ask what happen to the personalized tags I used to make. I previously created custom tags with kid's names printed on the front and contact/emergency info printed on the back.

Well, the unfortunate truth is with the cost of toner and maintance on my laser printer, they simply became too expensive to make. So I switched over to the tags I make now - with the writable backing (as pictured above).

And, although the customized tags were nice, I really do like this new style of tags better. One big difference is that I sell the writable tags in pairs with the idea that parents can use one tag now and save the 2nd for a later time - for example, the next school year when contact or emergency info may change.

The photo above shows my new style of writable tags and how to fill in the contact info on the backs of them.

I just came across a fantastic website for food allergy related cookbooks called food-allergy.org. The books pertain to multiple food allergies - not just peanuts.

What's A "Play Date Card"?

One of the new items I have listed on Allergy Alert Tags (once it gets back up and running VERY soon!) are what I'm calling "Play Date Cards". They are simply a folded notecard with room for writing your child's name on the front. Cards are blank inside for customizing allergen info and contact numbers - which may change depending on where you're leaving your child.

How do they work and what are they for? Simply fill one out before leaving your child at a friend's house, a birthday party, the babysitters, etc.

The cards provide added peace of mind that your child's caregiver has the needed information regarding your child's allergies. The brightly colored cardstock makes them easy to locate.

New Products...EpiPen Buttons

I'm looking forward to introducing a few new products to my Allergy Alert Website. One of those products are "EpiPen Buttons". These pin back buttons can be attached to backpacks, or other cases or totes that contain your child's EpiPen - making it easier to locate your child's EpiPen in case of an emergency.

My poor website is still in somewhat of a holding pattern. BUT it will be back up and running SOON - I promise! Earlier this year I decided to revamp Allergy Alert Tags just a bit. I have ideas for a few new products as well as newly designed tags. I'm also in the process of simplifying the shopping cart and checkout system.

Sooooo - with all these changes, I expect to have things up and running by very early June 2009 if not soon!

EpiPen Trainer...

Did you know you can purchase a "practice EpiPen" also called an Epi-Pen Trainer?

It's an EpiPen without a needle or epinephrine. The pen can be used to train someone on the proper use of an EpiPen. It's also a safe way to feel more comfortable with the "real thing" in case you should ever need to use one.

Consent To Treat Form

A "Consent to Treat" form is a document filled out and signed by a parent or legal guardian that gives medical personnel the right to treat your child in the event of an emergency if you are not present. Consent to treat forms can be given to anyone who is placed in charge of your child's care.

Consent to Treat forms usually contain the following information:

Child's name.
Child's date of birth.
Insurance carrier and policy number.
Doctors' names and phone numbers.
Important medical history, including allergies and chronic conditions.
A statement such as: Any licensed physician, dentist or hospital may give necessary emergency medical service to my child (YOUR CHILD'S NAME) at the request of the person bearing this consent form.
Parent/Legal Guardian's signature.

Welcome to my new blog, I'm Kristine. I own and operated www.AllergyAlertTags.com from Imagine That Art Studio. I work from my little corner of the world in Southeastern Michigan where I live with my husband, son and a spoiled beagle name Star.

A graphic designer by trade I once worked in the advertising industry. In the summer of 2007 I began designing and selling personalized laminated bag tags in my shop at TagsOnBags.etsy.com. One of my best selling tags was a personalized peanut allergy tag. Recognizing the large number of children with food allergies and other serious medical conditions, I decided to create an entire line of alert tags just for kids - thus AllergyAlertTags.com began.

I'll be updating Allergy Alert Tags Blog on a regular basis, hopefully filling it with useful information for parents of kids with food allergies and other serious medical conditions. Thank so much for stopping by and please check back often!
